The Christian year begins with Advent, a reminder that our understanding of time does not correspond to
the calendar or the culture, but to Christ and his presence. Advent marks our beginning, our time of
preparing for the coming of Christ in our lives, the church, and the world. Advent is as much a time of
penitence, fasting, and prayer as is Lent. Advent points the way to Christmas and is an opportunity to
cultivate and deepen the spiritual practices of hope, longing, and expectation.
I wonder what you are hoping for as the new Christian year begins? As we enter another year together, I
would like to invite you to join me in the holy practice of preparation and expectation — not only for the
coming of Christ, but also for the ways God is preparing us as a congregation for what’s next.
In that same spirit of anticipation, our church will be working with a consultant, Rev. Carl Arrington, who
will guide us as we listen for God’s direction for the future of our ministry as a faith community. To help
